At the moment there seems to be a never ending supply of bleak stories showing the very worst of humanity, however this is not the world I personally know. In my teaching I used to try and find good news stories to share with my students too – often things like random acts of kindness. Recently some friends in the RE community have begun to share some uplifting stories on social media and I wondered if we could all do a bit more to distribute these and share some in school – this would motivate people to do the right thing! Most of us do good things anyway and we don’t expect an award or praise etc but it might be time that we flagged these news stories up a bit to give a bit of balance….

Hi David I think trying to reinforce the positive effects of religion within society is a great way to outline good morals within the classroom and take away any negative thoughts and feelings that people may have about religion in wider society. I will definitely try to being a more positive vibe when discussing religion in the classroom.

That’s great, sometimes there are stories that aren’t specifically religious but show some morality that religions promote. In this story from the olympics the issue of sportsmanship can be explored. It seems often that there is a win at all costs mentality that shows the worst of human nature, this story shows kindness and was rightly publicised widely. There are video clips available too. Even though both athletes came in last they were rewarded with a place in the final as they showed Olympic values.

Hello David, I think that sharing such stories is an excellent way to promote that regardless of one’s belief, “humanity comes before religiosity”, which is discussed by an esteemed
    Scholar Habib Ali. http://seekershub.org/blog/2015/03/humanity-before-religiosity/
