The following are useful starting points for RE in Special Education.

Cornwall RE in Special Education   The Cornwall SACRE website has a section with a programme of study for Religious Education in Special Education.

In the revision of the Agreed Syllabus in Cornwall undertaken in 1999 and 2000 it was recognised by SACRE, and the Agreed Syllabus Conference, that it was difficult for schools to meet the needs of pupils with severe or multiple learning difficulties using a syllabus designed for mainstream pupils. The RE Adviser worked with a group of teachers of SLD and PMLD pupils to develop a section in the Syllabus to meet those pupils' needs. It was important that the general pattern of this section mirrored that of the main document so that schools could work together in planning and resourcing. When the syllabus was reviewed in 2004-5 that section was adjusted in the light of experience in special education and the outcomes were tied to the P Scales enabling teachers to better plan for progress in relation to pupil's own Individual Education Plans (IEPs). The end result is that this section can be used independently by area resource bases and special schools and in mainstream schools with pupils who attain below Level 1 of the syllabus but are educated alongside other pupils of their age who do not experience these profound difficulties.
