Discovering Muslims in Britain: for Key Stage 3
23 November, 2020
Created by Cardiff University’s Islam-UK Centre, these teaching resources take a sociological approach to the study of religion to explore the ‘big research question’: what does it mean to be a Muslim in Britain today?
These lessons, each of which includes a PowerPoint, lesson plan, and worksheet, focuses on the experiences and understanding of Muslims in Britain as a way in which to explore how religious believers live their faith in everyday British life. In this approach, Islam as a religious tradition forms a framework of concepts that are then considered through various social, political and historical disciplinary perspectives. Focussing on Muslims, rather than Islam, allows us to highlight the voices of believers through interviews and videos, include aspects of history and statistics, and use these sources meaningfully as data in the RE classroom.
