Autumn 2022 – Celebrating Primary Religion and Worldviews

This term we are celebrating all things Primary RE, and there is so much to celebrate! We will be bringing you inspirational examples of curriculum design, considering what is required to lead in Religion and Worldviews at Primary level as well as how to support the wider community around children.

Gillian Georgiou, RE Adviser to the Diocese of Lincoln, has a background in Secondary education. Since becoming Diocesan advisor she has gained a wide experience of working with Primary colleagues. As Gillian notes:

‘My background is in secondary education; my teaching experience has always been of working in a small department of specialists, teaching hundreds of students the same subject. My expertise was rooted in my subject specialism, rather than in educational practice more broadly.

Since working as an adviser with primary and secondary colleagues across greater Lincolnshire, I have been struck by primary teachers’ awareness of the latest research and thinking in education. Primary colleagues are keenly aware of the broader conversations in educational theory and practice. They are constantly engaged in what a good RE/History/Science/Maths curriculum looks like and they utilise this breadth of expertise to impact across everything they teach. It is far more common for me to talk to a primary colleague about disciplinary knowledge, for example, and for them to understand what I am talking about because they are familiar with it through their History or Geography curriculum. If Secondary teachers can build strong links with primary colleagues, their own teaching practice will benefit hugely. I have come to understand that celebrating religion and worldviews is about celebrating the connections we make across educational settings, as well as celebrating the practice we find in our own spaces.’
