Power of Story: Book Recommendations

Stories are central to religion and worldviews education, offering powerful ways for pupils to explore beliefs, values and questions about meaning, identity and belonging. Through stories, learners encounter characters who wrestle with moral choices, express faith, doubt or hope, and live out their beliefs in everyday life. In this way, stories help bring theological, philosophical and ethical ideas to life, connecting intellectual understanding with human experience.

Using story in RE also helps pupils see religions and worldviews as lived and dynamic rather than simply collections of facts. Carefully chosen texts can nurture empathy, challenge stereotypes and encourage thoughtful dialogue, supporting pupils to encounter both diversity and common humanity within and between traditions.

Created as part of our Power of Story Focus Week, this collection brings together book recommendations from teachers and educators from across the UK.
