Our commitment

At Culham St Gabriel’s Trust, we believe that high-quality religion and worldviews education should be accessible to everyone. We are committed to ensuring that the RE:ONLINE website is usable by as many people as possible, regardless of ability, technology or context.

We aim for all users to be able to:

  • Navigate the website using a keyboard, screen reader or speech recognition software
  • Understand content that is clearly structured with headings and consistent layouts
  • Adjust text size, colours and contrast
  • Access content across devices (desktop, tablet and mobile)
  • Engage with resources in ways that support different needs
  • ? something about Zooming in?

Accessibility is part of our wider commitment to inclusion in education.

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) version 2.2 AA standard, due to the issues outlined below.

WCAG standards are the recognised international benchmark for accessibility and underpin UK legal requirements for public sector organisations.

Known accessibility issues

We know that some parts of RE:ONLINE are not yet fully accessible. In particular:

Documents and resources

  • Some downloadable PDFs, Word documents and teaching resources are not fully accessible
  • Some documents may lack proper structure (e.g. headings, tagged content) or readable formats
  • Where possible, we are moving towards HTML-based content, which is more accessible

Images and media

  • Some images may not have sufficiently descriptive alternative text
  • Some videos may not yet include captions or transcripts
  • Embedded media from third-party platforms may not fully meet accessibility requirements
Accessible media should include captions, transcripts and audio description where needed

Navigation and structure

  • Some pages may not follow a fully consistent heading hierarchy
  • Navigation components (menus and filters) may not always be fully optimised for keyboard users
  • Some interactive elements may not clearly expose their function to assistive technologies

Accessible navigation and structure are essential for screen reader users and keyboard access

Visual design

  • In some places, colour contrast may not meet minimum accessibility thresholds
  • Text over images or visual backgrounds may occasionally reduce readability

Low contrast is one of the most common accessibility barriers across websites

What we are doing to improve accessibility

We are actively working to improve accessibility across the RE:ONLINE website. This includes:

  • Conducting accessibility audits against WCAG 2.2 AA standards
  • Improving document formats and prioritising accessible HTML content
  • Retrofitting alternative text to key images and resources
  • Adding captions and transcripts to new video content
  • Reviewing navigation, page structure and labelling for assistive technologies
  • Training staff and contributors in accessible content creation

Most websites have some accessibility barriers, and ongoing improvement is expected as part of compliance and good practice.

Disproportionate burden

Some older resources on RE:ONLINE form part of a large archive developed over many years.

Making all legacy materials fully accessible immediately would require significant resource. We therefore:

  • Prioritise accessibility in all new content
  • Improve high-demand existing resources over time
  • Provide alternative formats on request

Content outside the scope of the regulations

The regulations do not require us to fix:

  • Archived documents published before 23 September 2018 (unless still in active use)
  • Third-party content that we do not control
