2023 Competition for Children and Young People

Theme: A View on the World

How have religious and non-religious worldviews changed over time where you live?

How would you describe the mix of worldviews in your community today?

What might it look like in 50 years’ time?

What should our entry include?

We want to know what the religion and worldview landscape looks like in your local area. As part of your entry, you must include answers to these three questions:

  • How have religious and non-religious worldviews changed over time where you live?
  • How would you describe the mix of worldviews in your community today?
  • What might it look like in 50 years’ time?

We want to encourage children of all ages and from all types of school to take part. The following ideas are suggestions only, and we encourage you to think creatively about your context. You might include some of the following, or have your own ideas:

  • Children asking adults about their own worldviews
  • People in the local area reflecting on how the religious and non-religious views have changed over time
  • Sharing results of the #census2021 in your local area
  • Sharing results of a school or local survey that asks people to respond to the three questions
  • Images of your local area, including places of worship
  • A group of children or young people ‘showing us around’ the local area
Where can I get inspiration?
Who can enter?

The competition is open to all children and young people aged 5-18. We accept entries from individuals, pairs, groups, or whole classes. We have designed the competition particularly for those aged 8-13, but entries from all year groups are welcome. Entries are limited to five per school per key stage/age group. Schools may want to hold their own internal competition and submit to RE:ONLINE their best selection.

What about entries from special provision schools and PRUs?

We encourage entries from all types of school, including special provision schools and pupil referral units. We hope the option to provide images and/or film entries will enable as may children and young people to take part as possible. Judges will consider additional needs of children in the different age groupings. The focus is on creativity and innovation of approach.

How will the competition be judged? What are the judges looking for?

Judging by Culham St Gabriel’s Trustees, staff and consultants will take place in April 2023.
Entries are split into Key Stages/age groups (1,2,3,4 and 5) for judging. If your entries span more than one key stage, please submit them under the age group for the oldest pupil taking part.
Judges will particularly look for:

  • Clear understanding of the brief, including answering the three questions
  • An imaginative and original approach
  • A variety of views on the world which represent the local area
  • Clear storyline or thread through the script/storyboard so it is easy for viewers to follow
  • The ability to keep the viewer excited and engaged
What prizes are available?

Top Prize! The overall winner will have their film professionally made. A small film crew will visit your school and make your script/storyboard into a film. This film will be hosted on the Culham St Gabriel’s website and on Vimeo as part of a promotional film collection about religion and worldviews.

There will usually be at least one prize awarded for each key stage/age group:
Individual pupil winners £30 Book Voucher
Paired pupil winners £15 Book Voucher each
Groups or Class winners £50 Voucher for the school to spend on RE resources
Highly Commended Certificates will also be awarded at the judges’ discretion.

In addition, a certificate will be emailed to all participants who took part in the competition.

How do I enter pupils work into the competition?

The competition is now closed. Winners will be announced in May 2023

All entries should be listed on the Competition Entry Form 2023 which must accompany all submissions. Each entry file name should clearly state the name of the pupils/class, the key stage and school. Entries can only be sent in by teachers on behalf of pupils.

All entries must be submitted by emailing competition@cstg.org.uk with the Competition Entry Form 2023 (to include a list of vlog links) and each written/storyboard entry attached as a separate file.

Submitting a transcript: Transcripts should ideally be word-processed. If they are hand-written a photograph or scan of the work can be used, and if appropriate a teacher can transcribe the words underneath for clarity.

Submitting a storyboard: These can be sent as photographs, or scanned PDF files.

Submitting a vlog/visual file: Vlogs can be submitted using a WeTransfer link – pasting the link into the competition form. Each vlog file must have the name of the pupil, key stage and school. The vlog file should be a maximum of 90 seconds in length. You can transcribe the file if you wish and submit it with the entry, but this is optional. The competition organisers will not transcribe files.

All entries must be submitted by emailing competition@cstg.org.uk with the Competition Entry Form 2023 (to include a list of vlog links) and each written entry attached as a separate file.
