2023 Competition for Children and Young People

Theme: A View on the World

How have religious and non-religious worldviews changed over time where you live?

How would you describe the mix of worldviews in your community today?

What might it look like in 50 years’ time?

We warmly invite home educated children to enter this competition alongside children who go to school. It’s a fantastic opportunity which will appeal to avid film makers and storytellers. In our resources section you will find several suggestions which may act as a stimulus for children and young people to create a script, storyboard or film.

What should our entry include?

We want to know what the religion and worldview landscape looks like in your local area. As part of your entry, you must include answers to these three questions:

  • How have religious and non-religious worldviews changed over time where you live?
  • How would you describe the mix of worldviews in your community today?
  • What might it look like in 50 years’ time?

You might include some of the following, or have your own ideas:

  • Children asking adults about their own worldviews, this might include family members and friends.
  • People in the local area reflecting on how religious and non-religious views have changed over time. You might interview local religious leaders for example.
  • Sharing results of the #census2021 in your local area
  • Sharing results of a local survey that asks people to respond to the three questions
  • Images of your local area, including places of worship
  • A child or group of children ‘showing us around’ the local area
Where can I get inspiration?
Who can enter?

The competition is open to all children aged 5-18. Children can enter individually, in pairs, or in groups. We have designed the competition particularly for children aged 8-14 this year, but entries from all ages are welcome. Entries from children with special education needs are very welcome. Several children within one family can work together to create one or two submissions as pairs or groups, or you can submit one entry per child. We also welcome entries where children from multiple families have created something together. These can be submitted as a group entry. Each child can only submit or take part in one entry.

How will the competition be judged? What are the judges looking for?

Judging by Culham St Gabriel’s Trustees, staff and consultants will take place in April 2023.
Entries are split into age groups for judging as follows:
Ages 5-7
Ages 8-11
Ages 11-14
Ages 14-16
Ages 16-18

If your family entry spans more than one age group, please submit it under the age group for the oldest child taking part.

Judges will particularly look for:

  • Clear understanding of the brief, including answering the three questions
  • An imaginative and original approach
  • A variety of views on the world which represent the local area
  • Clear storyline or thread through the script/storyboard so it is easy for viewers to follow
  • The ability to keep the viewer excited and engaged
What prizes are available?

Top Prize! The overall winner will have their film professionally made. A small film crew will arrange to visit your home or in an arranged location to make your script/storyboard into a film. This film will be hosted on the Culham St Gabriel’s website and on Vimeo as part of a promotional film collection about religion and worldviews.

Prizes for each age group are:
Individual winners £30 Book Voucher
Paired winners £15 Book Voucher each
Groups winners £50 Voucher for your family group (or for a multiple family group to share between them) to spend on resources related to religion and worldviews
Highly Commended Certificates will also be awarded at the judges’ discretion.

In addition, a certificate will be emailed to all participants who took part in the competition.

How do I enter children and young people’s work into the competition?

The competition is now closed. Winners will be announced in May 2023

All entries should be listed on the Competition Entry Form 2023 which must accompany all submissions. Each entry file name should clearly state the name of the child, the age and parent or carer name. Entries can only be sent in by an adult on behalf of children. All those submitting work on behalf of children must be over the age of 18.

All entries must be submitted by emailing competition@cstg.org.uk with the Competition Entry Form 2023 (to include a list of vlog links) and each written entry attached as a separate file.

Submitting a transcript: Transcripts should ideally be word-processed. If they are hand-written a photograph or scan of the work can be used, and if appropriate a teacher can transcribe the words underneath for clarity.

Submitting a storyboard: These can be sent as photographs, or scanned PDF files.

Submitting a vlog/visual file: Vlogs can be submitted using a WeTransfer link – pasting the link into the competition form. Each vlog file must have the name of the pupil, key stage and school. The vlog file should be a maximum of 90 seconds in length. You can transcribe the file if you wish and submit it with the entry, but this is optional. The competition organisers will not transcribe files.

All entries must be submitted by emailing competition@cstg.org.uk with the Competition Entry Form 2023 (to include a list of vlog links) and each written entry attached as a separate file.

If you have any questions about the competition, please email competition@cstg.org.uk

All entries must be received by Friday 31st March 2023 at 5pm.
